Mark Huber is an aviation industry veteran who has worked in the flight training, aircraft sales, aircraft component, and airport development businesses. He has flight time in more than 50 different and diverse aircraft, including helicopters, aerobatic aircraft, vintage warbirds, jet fighters, business jets and turboprops, and transport-category aircraft. He has jumped out of several of these—on purpose—with a parachute. His defense and aviation journalism has been published in a variety of national and international periodicals.

Universal Avionics&nbsp;(UA, Booth No. 2545)&nbsp;is&nbsp;introducing&nbsp;Aperture,&nbsp;a sensor fusion and augmented reality platform&nbsp;for&nbsp;situational awareness.&nbsp;It is on display in Universal’s booth at BACE.&nbsp;Aperture can stitch and blend multiple external sensor inputs to provide a 360-degree&nbsp;composite&nbsp;visual to flight crews wearing Universal’s SkyLens helmet-worn displays.&nbsp;&nbsp;Certification and delivery&nbsp;are&nbsp;scheduled for Q3 2022.

 


Aperture is a family&nbsp;of products that builds on&nbsp;multi-sensor video management&nbsp;and&nbsp;can process a variety of video and sensor inputs to deliver real-time&nbsp;analysis&nbsp;such as visual positioning, obstacle detection, taxi guidance, and traffic awareness.&nbsp;&nbsp;The initial release of&nbsp;Aperture&nbsp;will process eight video inputs supporting up to four video outputs with near zero latency at a Design Assurance Level A.&nbsp;

 


Aperture&nbsp;is the foundation for Universal’s proprietary&nbsp;algorithms,&nbsp;currently undergoing trials, that will enable&nbsp;real-time, automatic object detection, classification and notification,&nbsp;and&nbsp;semantic segmentation.&nbsp;This includes the detection&nbsp;and notification&nbsp;of&nbsp;potential&nbsp;hazards such as&nbsp;nearby power lines&nbsp;or&nbsp;traffic on and around an active runway. The platform will combine information from on-board sensors and other avionics systems&nbsp;including&nbsp;mission computers&nbsp;and&nbsp;FMS&nbsp;to&nbsp;increase the situational awareness of flight crews and, when&nbsp;appropriate, provide them with guidance during all phases of flight.&nbsp;“The&nbsp;Aperture&nbsp;suite of capabilities will establish a new benchmark in sensor fusion, AI-powered augmented reality, and ultimately aircraft safety,”&nbsp;said&nbsp;said&nbsp;Dror Yahav, Universal Avionics CEO.
