Technology group Nvidia has selected eVTOL aircraft developer Joby as the aviation launch partner for its IGX Thor industrial-grade, artificial intelligence-based platform. Joby said the collaboration announced by the companies on October 28 will focus on advancing the development of its Superpilot autonomous flight technology for military and civil aircraft.
More specifically, the Superpilot system is a key facet of Joby’s hybrid-electric aircraft for defense applications. Having launched this project with <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2025-08-02/joby-and-l3harris-plan-hybrid-vtol-aircraft-defense-missions">L3Harris</a> in August, the company said it is preparing to expand flight demonstrations as part of <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/defense/2025-09-03/joby-demonstrates-autonomous-flight-defense-exercise">U.S. defense exercises</a> in 2026.
According to Joby, IGX Thor will help its efforts to achieve certification for Superpilot applications, first for military applications and later for civil platform as the FAA expands national airspace infrastructure. The advance computing capability is expected to accelerate the development of capabilities including advanced mission management, radar and perception processing, and sensor fusion. It could also support work on advanced predictive system health monitoring and digital twin modeling.
“The autonomous systems under development at Joby are poised to complement human intelligence by providing speed, precision, and stamina beyond what a person alone is capable of,” said Gregor Veble Mikić. “To achieve this, an aircraft needs a powerful onboard computer that can interpret extraordinary amounts of information to make decisions in real-time. Combining Nvidia’s compute power with world-class aircraft design, certification and rigorous flight testing capabilities, we’re enabling a new era of safety-first autonomy in aviation.”
