Since the introduction of the Sentry ADS-B In receiver in 2018, uAvionix, which manufactures the devices, and design partner Jeppesen ForeFlight have shipped more than 100,000 of the various models.
With a built-in attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), GPS for situational awareness, and a carbon monoxide (CO) detector, Sentry receivers also provide traffic and weather information on pilots’ iPhones and iPads. Pilots have reported CO alerts that prevented serious problems, as well as relying on ForeFlight’s synthetic vision coupled with the Sentry’s AHRS when avionics and vacuum pump failures threatened the safety of flight.
The most capable model is the $799 Sentry Plus with dual-band ADS-B traffic, subscription-free weather (in the U.S.), GPS, AHRS, CO detection, an integrated display, and more than 20 hours of battery life. The mid-level $649 Sentry has most of the same features but not the display or the Sentry Plus’s flight data recorder, and it has a 12-hour battery life. The $449 Sentry Mini includes ADS-B In traffic and weather but no CO detector or AHRS, and it requires USB-C power.
“We’re proud to work alongside Jeppesen ForeFlight to build a product pilots depend on,” said uAvionix v-p crewed aviation Shane Woodson, “and especially proud when pilots tell us how a CO warning, traffic alert, weather information, or backup attitude capability helped them safely manage a difficult situation.”
