A lifelong aviation enthusiast who joined&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;in 2007, Curt came to&nbsp;the publication&nbsp;from the broadcast industry where he was a national science and technology television reporter and producer. He writes on the FBO field, aviation finance, and sustainable aviation and occasionally contributes to&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;sister publication&nbsp;Business Jet Traveler. Curt was a member of the AINtv reporting staff that won the 2008 Aerospace Journalist of the Year award for Best Airshow Daily. That same year, he was a finalist for another AJOYA award. He earned an AJOYA for Best Business Aviation Submission in 2018 and was a finalist in that category in 2021. He received the National Air Transportation Association’s&nbsp; Aviation Journalist Award in 2012 and won a Pegasus Sapphire Business Aviation Award for outstanding journalism in 2021.
Before joining AIN, Curt worked with&nbsp;Consumer Reports’ television division, CRTV, and for several local television news staffs. An honors graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University in 1995. Aviation real estate developer and operator Sky Harbour Group will increase the size of its pending private hangar project at New York’s Stewart International Airport (KSWF).&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2024-06-14/new-yorks-stewart-intl-anticipates-bizav-building-boom">Announced</a> last year, the company’s leasehold will now expand from 12.5 acres to 26 acres, while the investment will also rise from $60 million to more than $100 million. Projected hangar space in the campus—which will also include a dedicated fuel farm for tenants—will double from initial estimates to 400,000 sq ft.
Vertically-integrated Sky Harbour manufactures its own prefabricated hangars in several sizes as part of its “Home Base Operator” concept of turnkey aircraft shelters. According to the company, the site plan for KSWF is still under development, but the facility will feature its SH-37 model, with the 37,000-sq-ft hangar capable of being divided into two 18,000-sq-ft hangars.
Sky Harbour is also engaging in a relationship with Red Tail Flight Academy, a KSWF-based flight school/charity that creates opportunities for traditionally underserved communities to enter the aviation industry. Sky Harbour will provide hangar and classroom space in its facility. Groundbreaking is anticipated in early 2027, with the opening a year later.
“Sky Harbour is seeking to expand the square footage of our existing airport ground leases in the nation’s top markets,” explained chairman and CEO Tal Keinan, adding that the New York City area is the top home-basing market in business aviation.
