In a first for commercial aviation, ATR and Elbit systems will make available a wearable substitute for a head-up display (HUD) for pilots flying ATR 600 series turboprops, the companies announced Monday. The system, called Skylens, integrates with Elbit’s ClearVision enhanced flight vision system (EFVS) to display high-resolution information, images and video on a head-mounted visor, allowing pilots flying ATR 600 series turboprops to take off and land in low-visibility conditions, day or night, and in locations not accessible to aircraft not equipped with EFVS. The visor eliminates the need to install a bulky HUD projector on the flight deck ceiling and a combiner glass in front of the pilot, while providing head-up information while looking through the windshield. The partners plan to offer the system on new ATRs and as a retrofit to other 600 series airplanes already in service.
