Paris 2024 Olympics Could See First eVTOL Passenger Flights with Volocopter VoloCity

Safran Electrical &amp; Power is helping Volocopter to devise a powertrain for its planned next-generation eVTOL aircraft. The companies signed a collaboration agreement at this week's Paris Air Show under which they will explore commercial and engineering partnerships, covering&nbsp;an electric propulsion system (EPS),&nbsp;battery units, and a power distribution system.
"The prospect of collaborating with Safran, a leader in powertrain development as part of our UAM ecosystem is exciting on several levels," said Volocopter CEO Dirk Hoke. "Optimizing battery density and improving EPS effectiveness is the biggest performance lever for lightweight aircraft like eVTOLs. And, on a personal note, it's a stellar example of French-German industry collaboration to keep European technology innovation competitive on a global level."
Volocopter has not confirmed details for a next-generation successor to its two-seat VoloCity aircraft. In June 2022, it flew a technology demonstrator of a larger, longer-range model, provisionally designating this as the <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-06-07/first-voloconnect-takeoff-volocopter-has-three-evtol-models-test-flights">VoloConnect</a>.
<h3 class="subheading">eVTOL Takes Off In Saudi Arabia</h3>
Electric air taxi developer Volocopter has successfully conducted its first flight trials in Saudi Arabia, the German company announced Wednesday during the Paris Airshow. According to Volocopter, that marked the first time that an eVTOL aircraft received special flight authorization in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Volocopter is collaborating&nbsp;with <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-01/saudi-tech-city-neom-set-become-urban-air-mobility-incubator">Neom</a>, a government-backed development project in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk province, to introduce urban air mobility services to the region in 2024. The company behind Neom is an <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-11-01/volocopter-draws-182-million-funding-saudi-chinese-interests">investor in Volocopter</a>.

As a so-called “smart city,” Neom runs entirely on renewable energy sources. When Volocopter and Neom announced their joint venture in 2021, Neom officials placed a provisional order for 15 Volocopter eVTOL aircraft, including 10 of the two-seat VoloCity model and five of Volocopter’s fully autonomous VoloDrone cargo-carrying model.

Volocopter also has been conducting flight demonstrations at the Paris Airshow this week with its two-seat VoloCity eVTOL aircraft. The company aims to secure EASA&nbsp; type certification for the aircraft and begin operations by 2024, just in time for the Olympic Games in Paris.

Volocopter Flies VoloCity eVTOL Air Taxi in Saudi Arabia

Volocopter this week officially opened the hangar&nbsp;that will house the production line for its family of eVTOL aircraft. On April 4, the company held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its headquarters in Bruchsal, Germany, to show off the purpose-built facility&nbsp;in which manufacturing equipment is now being installed on the airfield site it uses for flight testing.
Since receiving EASA production organization approval in 2021, <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-11-01/volocopter-draws-182-million-funding-saudi-chinese-interests">Volocopter</a> has been preparing to start assembling its two-seat <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/volocity">VoloCity </a>vehicle at an initial annual rate of at least 50 units following anticipated type certification in 2024. The facility will be used to manufacture carbon fiber parts&nbsp;and electric propulsion units, as well as for final assembly. Volocopter is still determining the production plans for&nbsp;its <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-07-01/volocopter-and-db-schenker-prepare-blueprint-evtol-cargo-operations">VoloDrone freighter</a> and larger, longer-range&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-06-07/first-voloconnect-takeoff-volocopter-has-three-evtol-models-test-flights">VoloConnect </a>eVTOL aircraft, and these should be settled by the end of this year when decisions about the outsourcing of some manufacturing have been finalized.&nbsp;
The ceremony was attended by Germany’s minister for digital affairs and transport, Volker Wissing, along with Anna Christmann, the federal government’s aerospace policy coordinator, and Winfried Kretschmann, a minister in the state government of Baden-Württemberg. During the event, Volocopter conducted a piloted flight demonstration with its 2X technology demonstrator.
“Germany is already a world leader in the development of air taxis, thanks in part to Volocopter’s great pioneering spirit,” Wissing commented. “I would like to support and build on this leading role by creating a framework that enables innovation and progress. We are working with key industry players on a strategy for air taxi operations here in Germany&nbsp;in which all technical and legal issues are addressed without delay.” 
Volocopter says it intends to launch commercial air taxi services with the VoloCity vehicle in locations including Singapore, <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-10-06/romes-new-vertiport-hosts-italys-first-crewed-evtol-aircraft-flight">Rome</a>, Saudi Arabia, and <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-03-22/paris-evtol-flight-trials-aim-make-big-quiet-impact-air-mobility">Paris</a>. Rival advanced air mobility pioneer Airbus, which is developing its CityAirbus eVTOL aircraft at <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-07-28/airbus-builds-test-center-work-cityairbus-nextgen-evtol-aircraft">Donauwörth</a> in Bavaria, is working with multiple stakeholders on plans to start operations in the <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-06-23/munich-airport-and-airbus-help-cities-establish-evtol-aircraft-operations">southern German state</a>.

Volocopter Opens eVTOL Aircraft Manufacturing Facility in Germany

Air transport information technology specialist SITA has chosen Volocopter as its preferred digital and IT systems partner for vertiports, the companies said Tuesday. Under the agreement, SITA also becomes the latest investor to join Volocopter’s Series E funding round.
Volocopter’s launch product, the <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/volocity">VoloCity</a> eVTOL air taxi, will operate routes in congested cities where customers can hail flights via designated vertiports. SITA will contribute its expertise in air transport for the emerging urban air mobility (UAM) industry, developing new operating standards and what it calls a “digital-first” passenger experience. SITA's IT portfolio includes airport management and operations, passenger operations, flight and aircraft operations, baggage processing, and border management.
Volocopter has gained a reputation for its integrated UAM ecosystem approach. Its digital operating system, the <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2020-10-28/volocopter-teams-lufthansa-uam-digital-platform">VoloIQ</a>, connects all partners, thereby enabling a “holistic” service. The VoloIQ&nbsp;therefore&nbsp;allows for a “digital-first” approach as part of a cloud-based system now in the process of securing certification by the relevant aviation authorities.
"Volocopter consistently takes a holistic ecosystem approach, said Volocopter chief commercial officer Christian Bauer. “Working in concert with our partners, we are setting up for commercial operations. This involves establishing the requisite infrastructure, maintenance, flight operations, IT, and customer services. SITA is a leading IT provider for airports and airlines, and we believe there is no better partner to make our seamless travel experience possible."
Late last year, Volocopter <a href="futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-11-01/volocopter-draws-182-million-funding-saudi-chinese-interests">raised another $182 million</a> in the second signing of its Series E funding round from Saudi regional development project Neom and Hong Kong’s Gly Capital Management. Volocopter said that the funding would carry the company beyond the certification of the VoloCity electric passenger aircraft.
Volocopter boasts more than 10 years of development experience and has flown some 1,500 <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-12-01/volocopter-concludes-european-urban-air-mobility-airspace-integration">test flights</a>. SITA Signs IT Partnership with Volocopter, Becomes Latest Series E Investor

Volocopter has completed a two-week flight-test campaign as part of Europe’s CORUS-XUAM project to establish how so-called U-Space infrastructure for uncrewed aircraft could be used to support urban air mobility (UAM) flights. The German eVTOL aircraft developer deployed its VoloDrone autonomous vehicle for&nbsp;flight trials that concluded this week at the country’s DLR National Experimental Test Centre for Unmanned Aircraft at Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport.
The tests focused on harmonizing digital interfaces for both air traffic management (ATM) and unmanned traffic management (UTM) to allow new types of aircraft to be safely integrated into public airspace. CORUS-XUAM receives funding as part of the European Union’s SESAR Horizon 2020 program and is coordinated by the Innovation Hub of ATM agency Eurocontrol. The somewhat contrived acronym stands for Concept of Operations for European UTM Systems—Extension for Urban Air Mobility.
The final day of testing on November 30 featured a public display of deconfliction flights as part of the CORUS-XUAM Very Large Demonstration exercise. This involved remotely piloted and automated sorties in which the VoloDrone simulated flights in and around Frankfurt and London with unforeseen circumstances and obstacles factored in along predetermined flight routes. 
The airspace around these major cities and their airports was scaled down accurately and mapped to fit the physical space of Magdeburg-Cochstedt Airport. During the trials, the VoloDrone, which is intended for cargo deliveries, showed how it can yield to higher-priority traffic and change its speed to ease traffic-flow management.

In the German use case, the VoloDrone’s flight path between the Messe Frankfurt convention center and Frankfurt Airport was diverted after Volocopter’s VoloIQ operating system received a message from an aircraft making an emergency medical flight to get a patient to a hospital. Then, in a simulation around London airspace, the VoloDrone decreased its speed to make space for a safe approach into congested airspace around one of the UK capital’s busy airports to maximize the efficiency of traffic flow.
In both cases, the digital interfaces of VoloIQ and the assigned U-Space service provider worked together to manage the VoloDrone’s flight path and speed, as well as assign airspace priorities. Volocopter intends to use VoloIQ to manage all aspects of commercial eVTOL operations, including air taxi flights with its two-seat <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/volocity">VoloCity</a> aircraft.
“Our team has proven throughout these tests that our aircraft, operations, and digital software can safely adapt to various test-flight scenarios,” commented Oliver Reinhardt, Volocopter’s chief risk and certification officer. “To ultimately establish a robust UAM ecosystem, we will continue to test and improve the ATM/UTM interfaces beyond the testing sandbox, as well as improve communications with individual partners within each country’s ecosystem.”
The trials followed a similar exercise that Volocopter conducted in September at <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-09-23/european-flight-simulation-tests-evtol-aircraft-airspace-integration">Pontoise airfield </a>near Paris. This is part of a wider CORUS-XUAM exercise being conducted elsewhere in Europe, including <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-02-09/ferrovial-seeks-european-funding-spanish-vertiport-network">Spain</a>.
Volocopter aims to have the VoloCity ready to start commercial operations in cities including <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-04-15/quiet-evtol-flights-will-be-benchmark-olympic-gold-paris-2024-games">Paris</a> and Singapore by 2024, for short flights of up to around 22 miles. The company is also developing a four-seat eVTOL model called the <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-06-07/first-voloconnect-takeoff-volocopter-has-three-evtol-models-test-flights">VoloConnect</a> that will have a range of 60 miles.

Volocopter Concludes European Urban Air Mobility Airspace Integration Flight Trials

Volocopter has raised another $182 million in the second signing of its Series E funding round from Saudi regional development project Neom and Hong Kong’s Gly Capital Management, the Bruschal, Germany-based eVTOL manufacturer said Tuesday. Volocopter added that the funding will carry the company beyond the certification of the VoloCity electric passenger aircraft.
Volocopter boasts more than 10 years of development experience and has flown some 1,500 test flights. The only electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) company to receive Design Organization Approval&nbsp;from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Volocopter expects to launch its first commercial air taxi routes within two years in places such as Singapore, Rome, Paris, and the Neom region.&nbsp;&nbsp;
“Attracting Neom And Gly as investors is a great success and highlights our pole position in the commercial certification race,” said Volocopter CEO Dirk Hoke. “This is the key requirement to launching commercial operations and starting to generate revenue.” 
Volocopter and Neom signed a joint-venture agreement in December 2021 with a view to integrating the VoloCity air taxi and the VoloDrone autonomous cargo-carrying vehicle into Neom’s mobility systems. The joint venture will design, integrate, and operate the region’s all-electric public flight routes for seven years after the launch of the project.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Gly operates as a subsidiary of Chinese automotive company Geely Holding, which in April 2021 entered a joint venture with Volocopter to bring UAM to Chinese megacities. That deal included a purchase agreement covering 150 Volocopter aircraft.
“Volocopter’s vision encompasses industrial short- and medium-range commercial passenger applications to bring efficiency to the way we move around our cities,” said Gly Capital co-CEO Hrvoje Krkalo. “I look forward to supporting their journey, a journey that promises to be exciting, safe, and scenic in equal measure.” &nbsp;
Volocopter’s Series E funding round remains open, said the eVTOL manufacturer, which added that many interested companies have passed their due-diligence phase.

Volocopter Draws $182 million in Funding from Saudi, Chinese Interests

German eVTOL developer Volocopter has partnered with Aviation Safety and Quality Solutions (ASQS), an Austrian software company, to help it&nbsp;design and produce aircraft to certification standards.&nbsp;
Under the partnership, Volocopter will implement ASQS’s integrated quality and safety management system (IQSMS) in all aspects of its business, including engineering, manufacturing, operations, and maintenance. IQSMS is a web-based program used by more than 280 aviation companies worldwide to ensure that aircraft meet the required standards for safety and quality.
The IQSMS software will enable comprehensive monitoring of all compliance and safety-related aspects of Volocopter’s operations by providing a platform for hazard and event reporting, proactive and systemic risk management, and internal and external auditing, according to ASQS.&nbsp;
Volocopter, which was founded in 2011, plans to manufacture and operate autonomously flown eVTOL aircraft, including air taxis and cargo delivery drones, in urban areas.&nbsp;The company also intends to develop physical and digital infrastructure to enable its urban air mobility services. It has partnered with Microsoft to implement a cloud-based system called <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-05-17/microsoft-will-develop-cloud-based-platform-urban-air-mobility-operations">VoloIQ</a> to support all of its data management needs.&nbsp;
For ground infrastructure, Volocopter has partnered with Skyports to design and build the first so-called <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-09/volocopter-presents-blueprint-urban-air-mobility-ground-infrastructure">VoloPort</a>, an airport that can support the takeoff and landing of eVTOL aircraft. The first sample VoloPort was built in Singapore’s Marina Bay district in 2019 to support a public flight demonstration of Volocoopter’s <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/volocity">VoloCity</a> eVTOL aircraft. Volocopter has also conducted flight demonstrations with the VoloCity in other locations around the world, including Dubai, U.A.E.;&nbsp;Helsinki;&nbsp;Oshkosh, Wisconsin; and Hamburg, Germany.&nbsp;
In addition to the two-seat VoloCity air taxi, the company is developing a four-seat VoloConnect eVTOL aircraft for longer passenger flights between suburbs and city centers, as well as an autonomous freight-carrying VoloDrone. All three of these aircraft have already <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-06-07/first-voloconnect-takeoff-volocopter-has-three-evtol-models-test-flights">begun flight testing</a>. Initial flights of the VoloCity and VoloConnect will operate with a pilot on board, but Volocopter plans to transition to fully autonomous passenger flights once it meets regulatory and stakeholder acceptance requirements.

Volocopter Taps ASQS Software for Compliance and Safety Support

Volocopter this week confirmed that its four-seat VoloConnect eVTOL aircraft made its first test flight on May 20. During the Up.Partners annual gathering on June 7, the German company said that it now has full-scale prototypes of all three of its eVTOL designs engaged in test&nbsp;flights, including the two-seat VoloCity and the autonomous freight-carrying <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-07-01/volocopter-and-db-schenker-prepare-blueprint-evtol-cargo-operations">VoloDrone.</a>
The VoloConnect is expected to be able to fly 60 miles, which is almost three times farther than the <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-03-22/paris-evtol-flight-trials-aim-make-big-quiet-impact-air-mobility">VoloCity</a>'s limit, and at speeds of 155 mph. The company aims to bring the model into commercial service in 2026, two years after it launches its smaller sibling.
The May 20 first flight in Munich&nbsp;lasted two minutes and 14 seconds. Volocopter started developing the full-scale prototype just 17 months ago,&nbsp;in early 2021, and last year flew a one-third-scaled model.
The lift-and-cruise design features six rotors for vertical flight mounted on beams connecting the wings and the tail section and a pair of electric ducted fan engines at the rear of the fuselage. The aircraft is intended to serve relatively long&nbsp;routes rather than short intra-urban hops and could prove valuable in sprawling metropolitan areas like greater Los Angeles.
Since the first takeoff, it has expanded the flight envelope to achieve 40 mph in forward flight and 28 mph flying sideways. In the coming weeks, Volocopter’s flight test team, led by chief engineer Sebastian Mores, will conduct low- and high-speed maneuvers, transitions between hover and cruise phases of flight, and engine failures for both automated and autonomous flight modes.
“Having a whole family of electric aircraft in the test flight phase is a pioneering feat,” said Volocopter CEO&nbsp;Florian Reuter. “Volocopter’s leadership in the industry stems from announcing plans and then delivering them visibly with public test flights. Our technology platform is the foundation for our family of aircraft approach and has proven to deliver results at an astounding speed.”
According to Volocopter, commercial operations with all three of its eVTOL models will be managed through its <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-05-17/microsoft-will-develop-cloud-based-platform-urban-air-mobility-operations">VoloIQ digital platform</a>. This will be able to handle all operational tasks, including passenger services and aircraft maintenance.
During the Up.Partners summit meeting, Volocopter said that the total addressable market for all three models is worth in excess of $290 billion.
China-based EHang has already conducted flight tests with its different versions of its EH216 eVTOL, as well asthe earlier EH184 model, and also the larger, longer-range VT-30 vehicle.

With First VoloConnect Takeoff, Volocopter Has Three eVTOL Models in Test Flights

Aircraft ground&nbsp;handling chain <a href="https://www.jetex.com/">Jetex</a> expects to&nbsp;deploy and operate urban air mobility (UAM) takeoff and landing infrastructure and services for passengers under a strategic partnership announced on May 25&nbsp;with startup eVTOL developer and Volocopter. If the plan moves forward, Jetex could&nbsp;have some of these facilities up and running in 2024, when Volocopter expects to begin conducting air-taxi operations with its two-seat <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/volocity">VoloCity eVTOL aircraft</a>.
"The MoU is only the first step to looking at ideal routes and infrastructure locations in the cities mentioned," a Volocopter spokeswoman told FutureFlight. "And the details of what infrastructure will be used is still not final." The partners intend to jointly develop all aspects of "the customer journey process" for UAM.
According to Jetex, the priority markets for these vertiports are Miami, Singapore, and Paris, where the company already provides aircraft ground handling services and also where air-taxi operations are being mapped for passenger transportation. Both Jetex and Volocopter are now researching the most popular routes in these markets to ensure seamless transportation and organic integration with existing airport infrastructure. 
“Today, we define the framework for the future of urban air mobility. The UAM market is projected to grow from $2.6 billion in 2020 to $9.1 billion by 2030. We are proud to work with our partners at Volocopter on making this vision a reality,” said Jetex founder and CEO Adel Mardini. 
Volocopter has already conducted crewed flights over Paris, the U.S., and Singapore, where it unveiled its first full-scale air-taxi vertiport—dubbed a <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-12-09/volocopter-presents-blueprint-urban-air-mobility-ground-infrastructure">VoloPort</a>—in Marina Bay in 2019. The company says it has not yet determined whether all of the planned landing sites will be branded as VoloPorts and it does not intend for the facilities to be for its exclusive use as an operator.
“Signing this MoU with Jetex is an important first step toward a strategic collaboration to deploy sustainable and integrated UAM operations, as well as passenger services,” said Volocopter chief commercial operator Christian Bauer.
