A lifelong aviation enthusiast who joined&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;in 2007, Curt came to&nbsp;the publication&nbsp;from the broadcast industry where he was a national science and technology television reporter and producer. He writes on the FBO field, aviation finance, and sustainable aviation and occasionally contributes to&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;sister publication&nbsp;Business Jet Traveler. Curt was a member of the AINtv reporting staff that won the 2008 Aerospace Journalist of the Year award for Best Airshow Daily. That same year, he was a finalist for another AJOYA award. He earned an AJOYA for Best Business Aviation Submission in 2018 and was a finalist in that category in 2021. He received the National Air Transportation Association’s&nbsp; Aviation Journalist Award in 2012 and won a Pegasus Sapphire Business Aviation Award for outstanding journalism in 2021.
Before joining AIN, Curt worked with&nbsp;Consumer Reports’ television division, CRTV, and for several local television news staffs. An honors graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he earned a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Boston University in 1995. Curt lives in New York State with his wife and two young sons.

Avflight, the FBO operating sister company to Avfuel, has achieved Tier 1 certification under NATA’s <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2022-10-20/nata-updates-sustainable-aviation-business-standard">Sustainability Standard for Aviation Businesses</a> for 22 of its U.S.-based FBO service facilities.
As part of the Tier 1 certification process, all of the locations were required to establish their baseline carbon footprint, submit an environmental policy, and phase out single-use products in kitchen and dining areas. Additionally, they had to confirm the use of local recycling programs and paperless processes, along with the installation of LED lighting, a filtered water fill station, motion sensor lighting, Energy Star-rated kitchen appliances, and low-flow plumbing fixtures.
The certification covers all of Avflight’s U.S. locations (it also has FBOs in Winnipeg, Canada, and Belfast, Northern Ireland) except for its recently-acquired facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (KPIB), which is expected to join its siblings once it amasses the mandatory 12 months' worth of data.
“Sustainability is at the forefront of Avflight’s values and we are immensely proud of this achievement,” said Garrett Hain, the company’s treasurer and v-p of finance. “To have one of our locations certified is exciting, but for all 22 eligible U.S. locations to hold the title is a major achievement and amplifies our commitment to sustainability.”
Hain added that the acknowledgement supports the chain’s network-wide sustainable aviation initiative that will include the installation of electric charging stations in key markets.
