FAA Bans Somalia Overflights

Terrorist and miltant groups pose a threat to aircraft transiting the nation's airspace.

On May 12, the FAA issued a Notam restricting U.S. operators from flying in Somali airspace below FL260. The agency said international civil air routes transiting Somali airspace, as well as aircraft operating to and from Somali airports, are at risk from terrorist and militant groups. The groups may employ anti-aircraft weapons, including man-portable air defense systems (Manpads), small-arms fire and indirect fire from mortars and rockets targeting airports. Some of these weapons are capable of targeting aircraft at high altitudes, as well as during approach and landing with little or no warning.
