Darpa (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) has awarded prime contracts to all four participating companies to begin Phase 1 development for the agency’s VTOL X-Plane program. Boeing and Karem Aircraft received contracts this week; Aurora Flight Sciences and Sikorsky had previously received prime contract awards. While all four have submitted proposals for unmanned vehicles, the technology that is to be developed has equal application to manned VTOL aircraft.
