Ruag modifies Do 228s for German surveillance roles

Four Dornier 228s operated by the German Navy’s Marineflieger-geschwader 3 “Graf Zeppelin” on pollution-control and surveillance missions are being upgrade

Four Dornier 228s operated by the German Navy’s Marineflieger-geschwader 3 “Graf Zeppelin” on pollution-control and surveillance missions are being upgraded with new glass cockpits and composite propellers by Ruag Aerospace. The German Office of Defense Technology and Procurement signed the contract for the upgrade program in early August.

Graf Zeppelin flies the four Dornier 228 twin turboprops on pollution-control missions for the German Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs. Missions include surveillance over German coastal areas and pollution control. Two of the 228s are the -212(LM) version and are used to track oil slicks back to their origin, according to the German Navy.
