Flight operations using Collins Aerospace’s ArincDirect service can integrate flight planning, trip, and performance information into their own digital platforms via the new ArincDirect OpenAPI. About 1,900 customers use ArincDirect flight planning via the web or mobile devices.

“This allows customers to consume data in a much easier manner,” said executive director of apps and connectivity Ian Galloway. Integrations using OpenAPI can be done with scheduling software and enterprise resource management platforms, eliminating the need to move data manually from one system to another.

“Operators have all sorts of other systems…and a lot either require or benefit from flight-planning data,” he said. “It has been cumbersome to try to move that, especially if you have to key it in. With OpenAPI, they can subscribe to it and their system can then go and pull this data automatically…easier, faster, and more accurately. This is going to speed up their operations.”

The ArincDirect portal enables access to OpenAPI starting this month, and customers can specify just the information they need. “It’s useful for bigger and smaller operations,” Galloway said. “Our business aviation customers require things to be more efficient. They don’t have a big operational staff, but need to be quick.” Data available through OpenAPI includes flight-plan status, airspace information, trip performance, and logbook information.

“We know that the flight-planning system is the beating heart of their operations,” he said, “and we want to take care of their needs. Ease of secure access to data is table stakes.”

OpenAPI was designed to also preserve security. The OpenAPI portal key is specific to the customer’s account and connection, Galloway said, “and it is done in a very secure way.”
