<p>For operators of the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.weststaraviation.com/airframes-hawker/">Hawker 800, 800XP, and 850XP</a>, servicing the lavatory waste system has long been one of the more frustrating — and at times unpleasant — routine maintenance tasks. While the process has remained largely unchanged for years, the challenges associated with the original design continue to impact both convenience and operational reliability.</p>

<h2>The Challenge with the Original Design</h2>
<p>The factory-installed waste servicing system requires draining the lavatory tank through the ventral fuel tank service area, using an external connection that depends on a secondary pressurization plug commonly referred to as the “donut.”</p>
<p>This design presents several ongoing issues:</p>
<ul>
<li>Removal of the plug requires a T-handle tool, adding complexity to a routine task</li>
<li>If the lavatory tank valve is leaking, removing the plug can result in uncontrolled discharge</li>
<li>Reinstallation of the plug is often inconsistent or overlooked during ground servicing</li>
</ul>
<p>When the plug is not properly installed — or missing entirely — the operational impact becomes more serious.</p>
<h2>Operational Risk: MMEL Limitations</h2>
<p>If the secondary pressurization plug is not installed, the&nbsp;Minimum Equipment List (MMEL)&nbsp;restricts the aircraft to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Unpressurized flight only</li>
<li>Maximum altitude of 15,000 feet</li>
</ul>
<p>For operators, this can quickly lead to&nbsp;dispatch delays or cancellations, particularly when operating in regions where parts availability is limited. What should be a simple servicing issue can escalate into hours or even days of operational disruption.</p>

<p>West Star Aviation has developed and received approval to install an improved waste drain valve configuration that eliminates many of the shortcomings of the original system. Key improvements include:</p>

<p>The redesigned system incorporates the secondary plug directly into a hinged cap with an over-center locking mechanism. This eliminates the risk of:</p>
<ul>
<li>Misplaced or forgotten plugs</li>

<p>A spring-loaded internal fluid valve remains closed until the ground service cart is properly connected. The valve is then opened using a simple external lever — preventing accidental discharge and significantly reducing the risk of spills.</p>

<p>Once servicing is complete, closing the system is as easy as securing the hinged cap with the over-center handle — ensuring a consistent, reliable seal every time.</p>
