Kerry Lynch stepped into the role of editor of the&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;monthly magazine in May 2022 after serving with&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;for eight years. She joined&nbsp;AIN&nbsp;in December 2014 as a senior editor covering Washington and business aviation news. She has also served on Convention News teams, including as editor of&nbsp;HAI Convention News. Lynch previously spent 25 years with Aviation Week. During her time there, she reported for and later steered&nbsp;The Weekly of Business Aviation, oversaw business aviation content on the&nbsp;Aviation Week Intelligence Network, served on the&nbsp;Show News&nbsp;staff, and held roles as the Washington columnist for&nbsp;Business &amp; Commercial Aviation&nbsp;and&nbsp;Overhaul &amp; Maintenance&nbsp;monthly magazines. In 2021 she was honored with the National Business Aviation Association Platinum Wing Award for lifetime achievement in journalism and was the 2004 recipient of the National Air Transportation Association’s Aviation Journalism Excellence Award. She also has been a recipient of an Aerospace Media Award for business aviation (2022) and NBAA Gold Wing Award (2003, 2024). Lynch graduated from The Ohio State University with a bachelor of arts in journalism.

The FAA this month is kicking off the next phase of its remote tower program at Leesburg Executive Airport (JYO) in Virginia.&nbsp; Phase 3a of the program is set to begin June 25 and run from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. for about 30 days, NBAA reported to its members.

 


The FAA is working with the Virginia Small Aircraft Transportation System Laboratory on the pilot project, which involves a mobile ATC tower at JYO and Saab Sensis technology to test the remote tower concept.&nbsp;Remote towers use high-definition cameras and sensors that enable controllers in a remote location to track and manage traffic at non-towered airports.

 


Costs of managing such facilities are significantly less than a full tower, Heidi Williams, NBAA director of air traffic services and infrastructure told members, saying this could open the door for air traffic services at airports unable to afford full standalone towers.

 


During the pilot program, pilots flying both VFR and IFR operations at the airport will be required to contact the tower, and Williams advises pilots to continue to follow the requirements of the JYO Maneuvering Area as outlined in the special flight rules area NOTAM.
