The FAA is urging operators to carefully review SID (Standard Instrument Departure) procedures at New Jersey’s Teterboro (TEB) and Nevada’s Henderson Executive (HND) airports, two of the nation’s busiest general aviation facilities. Concerned about airspace conflicts, about four years ago the FAA implemented “climb via” phraseology at both airports to simplify assigning SID and RNAV SID procedures with speed and altitude restrictions. Persistent issues with those clearances have spurred the FAA’s reminder on the procedures, which affect the RUUDY 6 RNAV departure from Runway 24 at Teterboro and the SID from Henderson’s Runway 35L.

 


"RNAV restrictions can be a matter of life or death,” said Keith Gordon, a member of the NBAA Access Committee, which was instrumental in the “climb via” implementation.

 


David Belastock, president of the Teterboro Users Group, which worked closely with the FAA on a letter to airmen (LTA) clarifying the procedure at that airport, said Jeppesen is expediting “the publication of charting enhancements that more vividly denote altitude and speed constraints." Henderson has issued a similar LTA and instituted a temporary procedure in which tower controllers will ask pilots to verify their awareness of the mandatory altitude restriction.
