Pilots Should Pay Close Attention When Departing SJC

The FAA has already violated a number of pilots for misreading the departure procedure.

Although the Tecky One departure for Norman Y. Mineta San Jose airport (SJC) is only one month old, a number of pilots have already found themselves the recipients of an FAA pilot deviation report for both altitude and speed busts related to the procedure, including a few for loss of standard vertical separation between aircraft on adjacent routes. The sticking point seems to be a mandatory 5,000-foot crossing altitude at the Spartans (SPTNS) waypoint that is charted with both an under- and overscore indicating the altitude is mandatory.
