There are two new iPad apps for the complex world of international flying, released by Scott International Procedures Training. They’re both designed to help pilots keep relevant bits of necessary information close at hand in the cockpit without paper. The first app is Scott’s International Cockpit Reference Handbook, traditionally a spiral-bound text designed for rapid recall of important topics such as special oceanic flight operations, SOPs by phase of flight for oceanic crossings, normal and contingency operating procedures for oceanic and U.S. domestic RVSM airspace and even equal-time points. The iPad app is color coded to make information retrieval a snap. The second app is sure to appeal to ocean-crossing pilots who hate rolling out paper plotting charts to track their position, especially at night (plotting a flight is actually a requirement for any flight when the distance between ground-based navaids exceeds 725 nm). Scott’s new iPad-based plotting chart takes much of the pain out of maintaining situational awareness over the ocean. The app includes a full range of electronic plotting tools pilots need to operate in non-radar oceanic operations. At the completion of the flight, the entire plotting chart can be converted to PDF format for easy electronic storage, along with the integrated position report form and oceanic checklist.
