A valve left open on a fuel-farm tank at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls, S.D., late last Thursday allowed nearly 10,000 gallons of jet-A to spill into a containment area. Landmark Aviation, the FBO in charge of the fuel farm, was able to shut off the fuel after an alarm alerted personnel to the spill. “There was no damage,” a Landmark spokesman told AIN, “and things worked as designed. There was never any danger of the fuel escaping the containment area.” Cleanup of the spill took about four hours and removed about 99 percent of the fuel in the containment area, he said. “The remainder will migrate to the low point in the containment area and will be removed.” The FBO will be reviewing with its employees the procedures for movement of valves and for shutting the fuel farm down when an alarm is activated. “Everyone responded exactly as they had been trained, which avoided further loss of fuel,” the spokesman said.
