FlightSafety International (FSI) and CAE will soon be offering online courses to address the TEB5 departure route from Runway 24 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey. The training companies hope the courses will help reduce the number of altitude overshoots by departing aircraft, which totaled 115 between February 2005 and this past February, according to the NASA/FAA Aviation Safety Reporting System. The departure requires crews to climb to 1,500 feet until the airplane passes the TEB 4.5 DME arc. Only then can departing flights climb to and maintain 2,000 feet. According to local ATC, these altitudes are critical to maintaining proper separation from the Newark 22L arrivals and for terrain clearance to the west. A FlightSafety instructor said the course should be available within two months.
