Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) has asked President Bush to replace FAA Administrator Marion Blakey and NTSB chairman Mark Rosenker because they have not grounded the Mitsubishi MU-2. Early last year Tancredo asked the FAA to ground the turboprop twin “due to its shockingly high accident rate.” In lieu of grounding the aircraft, Tancredo agreed with Mitsubishi that the FAA should mandate a type rating. Instead, the agency decided to implement a regulation requiring additional periodic training of MU-2 pilots. “There have been three fatal crashes since the FAA’s decision, and yet no new regulation has been put in place,” Tancredo said. “I believe the public would be well served if they [Blakey and Rosenker] were replaced by administrators willing to act swiftly and deliberately on this matter.”
