Airbus reported Tuesday that it booked orders for 102 airliners jets in August, marking its best month for sales since the onset of the Covid-19 crisis in January 2020. The strong performance followed a comparatively dismal July, when it inked just a single contract with Mexican airline Volaris for two A321neos.

 


The A321neo was by far its best-selling aircraft last month, accounting for 86 percent of its sales tally.

 


Airbus’s August order book included the sale of 30 A321neos to Delta Air Lines, 36 of the same model to UK’s Jet2, and 21 to Latam Airlines Group. The South American group also finalized a deal for seven A320neos, while German leisure carrier Condor’s purchase of seven A330-900s accounted for the only widebody win for the OEM.

 


Airbus delivered 40 commercial jets to 25 customers during the typically slow summer holiday month of August, compared with 42 in August 2019. After handing over 47 aircraft this past July, it shipped 77 aircraft in June and 50 in May. August deliveries consisted of two widebody aircraft, one A350-900 to Cathay Pacific and one to Japan Airlines, and 38 single-aisle aircraft, including five A220s. &nbsp;&nbsp;

 


Airbus’s latest orders and deliveries data showed that the European OEMs shipped 384 commercial aircraft to airlines or leasing companies in the first eight months of the year. Single-aisle jets accounted for the vast majority at 341 units. The company earlier this year raised its full-year delivery outlook and said it expects to deliver 600 commercial aircraft in 2021, versus a previous target of “at least 566.” That means it will need to ship 216 aircraft in the remaining four months of the year, or an average of 54 units per month, if it wants to reach its full-year forecast.

 


In the first eight months of 2021, Airbus logged orders for 269 aircraft across its product line of A220 and A320 family single-aisle and A330 and A350 XWB widebody aircraft. It also reported 137 cancellations, resulting in a net order tally for 132 aircraft at the end of August.
