Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

Transport Canada has finished its review of results collected from Boeing 737 Max flight tests conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration from June 29 and July 1 and plans this week to conduct its validation flight tests with the same 737 Max 7 airliner used in the FAA trials. The Canadian agency will become the first international aviation authority involved in validating the FAA data. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has yet to confirm its intentions but it too will need to conduct its own validations before the Max flies in scheduled service again.

 


Employees from Transport Canada plan to fly to Boeing facilities in Seattle this week to conduct evaluations on the engineering simulator, then back to Vancouver, British Columbia, Transport Canada confirmed in a statement to AIN. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, the test aircraft will fly to Vancouver to allow Transport Canada employees to board. The flight test itself will take place in U.S. airspace, and then the aircraft will return to Vancouver to allow the Canadian personnel to disembark.

 


“Mitigation measures due to Covid-19 have been established for the validation activities including flight tests to ensure the health and safety of Transport Canada employees,” said the Canadian authority in a statement. “Transport Canada remains committed to ensuring that the flight restrictions in Canada are in place until fully satisfied that all safety concerns have been addressed by the manufacturer and the FAA and that enhanced flight crew procedures and training are in place.”
