Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

Boeing posted its largest single order for 737 Max narrowbodies from a leasing company Monday after collecting a firm order for eighty 737 Max 8s from SMBC Aviation Capital worth more than $8.5 billion at list prices, the airframer announced. With the agreement SMBC becomes the 50th 737 Max customer and increases the program’s orderbook to more than 2,400 airplanes.

 


“It is ten years since our business placed its first order with Boeing and we have enjoyed a decade of successful partnership since then,” said SMBC Aviation Capital CEO Peter Barrett. Headquartered in Dublin with offices in Tokyo, SMBC counts 180 Boeing airplanes in its portfolio and 95 airline customers in more than 40 countries.

 


“This order is another example of our history of partnership with SMBC Aviation Capital and Japan,” said Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO Ray Conner. “Today's announcement from a top leasing company is a vote of confidence in our 737 MAX and helps SMBC Aviation Capital capture the strong demand in the single-aisle market.”

 


Boeing forecasts that airlines will need more than 25,600 single-aisle airplanes in the category of the 737 Max over the next 20 years.

 


Japanese customers have purchased more than 1,000 Boeing airplanes over 60 years and the country’s aerospace companies contribute to all Boeing commercial airplane programs, primarily making subassemblies for the 737, 747-8, 777 and 787, and now the 737 Max and 777X.
