The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team yesterday to assist with the investigation into Saturday’s accident in Georgetown, Guyana, involving a Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 that broke in two after overshooting the runway at Cheddi Jagan International Airport. The airplane crashed through a chain-link fence and came to rest on a dirt road that ran adjacent to a deep ravine. All of the 156 passengers and six crewmembers survived.

The accident happened at about 1:25 am EDT, as Caribbean Airlines Flight 523 (Trinidad & Tobago registration 9Y-PBM) tried to land on a wet runway in Guyana following a scheduled flight from Trinidad. The flight originated at New York JFK International Airport. Reports from Guyana indicated that up to 100 people suffered injuries, including a broken leg and numerous lacerations.
