<p>Air has successfully flown the first hover tests of its new personal eVTOL aircraft, Air One, the Israel-based startup announced on July 12.</p>
<p>The full-scale <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/air-one">Air One</a> prototype took off above the fields of Megiddo in northern Israel on June 21. It completed several unpiloted hover tests throughout the day and during the following two weeks, in which the aircraft lifted off, hovered, and returned to the ground safely, the company said.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“All of the aircraft’s systems functioned as designed, providing full control and stability,” Air officials wrote in today’s announcement. “Furthermore, Air One’s energy use during flight was exactly as predicted, demonstrating its ability to execute expected performance metrics.”</p>
<p>“It was truly awe-inspiring to watch Air One lift off the ground for the first time. We’ve been on this upward journey for nearly five years and cannot wait for the public to join us on this ride,” said Rani Plaut, CEO and co-founder of Air. “This momentous milestone secures AIR’s spot as a market leader in the personal air mobility space, making the thrill of flight achievable on a daily basis. <p>While many eVTOL companies are focused on air taxis for commercial use, the two-seat Air One is designed to function as a personal vehicle. The foldable, fixed-wing aircraft features eight electric motors and is small enough to be stored in most garages and driveways. And owners of the Air One vehicles will not need to have the same type of license as traditional airplane pilots, according to Air.</p>
<p>“The recent change in the FAA’s approach to the emerging eVTOL segment classifies eVTOLs under a new category of powered-lift, rather than roping them into the airplane category. This means that, while previously an eVTOL pilot would require airplane pilot licensing plus additional training, eVTOLs will now have their own, separate and specific training path, which we expect to both shorten and simplify the process,” Plaut told <strong>FutureFlight</strong>.</p>
<p>Air One will have a range of 110 miles (177 kilometers), a maximum speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) and a cruise speed of 100 mph (161 km/h)—so it can fly for about an hour on a single charge. It can carry payloads up to 440 pounds (200 kilograms), or about two passengers plus luggage; its luggage compartment measures 22 inches (55 centimeters) high, 14 inches (35 cm) wide and 9 inches (22 cm) deep. The aircraft’s batteries take one hour to fully charge, and they can charge from 20 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Following the success of these initial hover tests, Air plans to expand to full flight envelope testing this year. The company is working with the FAA to complete the G1 approval stage in its type certification process&nbsp;by the end of next year. First deliveries are expected to begin in 2024.</p>
<p>The company is already taking orders for the Air One, which has a base price of $150,000. “Additional offerings are still in the works, however we envision a range of options including increased range, interior upgrades, and improved customer experience features,” Plaut told <strong>FutureFlight</strong>. Prospective customers can place orders online for a $1,000 deposit. According to Plaut, Air has already received more than 150 pre-orders from customers mainly in the United States, but also in Europe, Australia and Israel.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Air has <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-03-10/flyone-agrees-distribute-and-support-air-one-personal-evtol-australia">partnered with FlyOne</a> in Australia for local service and maintenance, and the company recently announced a partnership with the aircraft retail outlet Aeroauto Aeromall <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-05-09/aeroautos-florida-showroom-market-air-one-personal-evtol-aircraft">to establish a specialized showroom</a> and dealership in Palm Beach Country, Florida. “We are partnering with additional top tier suppliers as we work to finalize our supply chain en route to full production capacity,” Plaut told <strong>FutureFlight</strong>.</p>

AeroDelft Student Team Flies Hydrogen Phoenix Prototype

<p>A team of students at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands has successfully flown the first prototype of its Phoenix hydrogen-powered aircraft.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The AeroDelft student team aims to promote the use of liquid hydrogen as an alternative to conventional aviation fuels by developing two hydrogen-powered aircraft: the remotely piloted <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-02-26/aerodelft-student-team-unveils-hydrogen-powered-aircraft">Phoenix Prototype</a> and the two-seat Phoenix Full Scale, which the team revealed today with a taxi run during the annual AeroDelft Summer Event at Breda International Airport in the Netherlands.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Initial flights of the uncrewed prototype will be powered by electric batteries, but the team plans to shift to gaseous hydrogen—which is easier to work with than liquid hydrogen—with the goal of developing a piloted, liquid hydrogen-powered aircraft by 2025.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Phoenix Prototype, a 1:3 scale model of the&nbsp;aircraft, took to the skies for the first time on June 14, the AeroDelft team announced today. The battery-powered prototype, which looks like a glider, flew for 14 minutes and reached an altitude of 350 meters (1,150 feet), AeroDelft’s chief prototype testing engineer Gerben Drijfhout told <strong>FutureFlight</strong>. Data from this test flight will pave the way for the AeroDelft team to modify the aircraft to run on hydrogen power, he said.</p>
<p>The prototype has a wingspan of six&nbsp;meters (20 feet) and weighs 40 kilograms (88 pounds). Its larger counterpart, the Phoenix Full Scale, has a wingspan of 18 meters (59 feet) and weighs 1,100 kilograms (2,400 pounds). The students created this two-seater aircraft using a kit-built Sling 4 composite airplane.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“In the coming months, we will perform more flights on batteries to gather even more data and get comfortable with the aircraft,"&nbsp;Drijfhout said. "A gaseous hydrogen flight is then scheduled for 2023.” AeroDelft aims to fly the first full-scale version of its aircraft with a pilot on board in 2024, and that test flight will use hydrogen gas, Drijfhout added. Liquid hydrogen-powered flights of the full-size model are expected to begin in 2025.</p>
<p>“We will first attempt a flight on gaseous hydrogen to prove our hybrid powertrain is airworthy,” Drijfhout said. “The liquid hydrogen components will continue iterative development to then be proven on the ground before being integrated into the aircraft.”</p>

AeroDelft Student Team Flies First Prototype of ‘Phoenix’ Hydrogen-powered Aircraft

<p>California-based eVTOL start-up Overair has selected Toray Composite Materials America to supply advanced materials for its Butterfly eVTOL prototype.&nbsp;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/butterfly">Overair’s Butterfly</a> is a six-seat eVTOL aircraft designed to provide a sustainable aerial ride-sharing option for urban areas with dense populations and heavy traffic. Toray will provide a carbon fiber composite infused with an epoxy resin—also known as a “pre-impregnated” material, or prepreg—for the Butterfly prototype’s structural components and propulsion units. Specifically, the Butterfly will use <a href="https://www.toraycma.com/wp-content/uploads/3960-PREPREG-SYSTEM.pdf">Toray’s T1100/3960 prepreg material</a>, which is specially formulated for high-performance aerospace systems.&nbsp;</p>
<p>"We're excited to be working closely with Toray's advanced materials as we continue the development of our all-electric Butterfly experimental prototype aircraft," said Ben Tigner, co-founder and CEO at Overair. "Our unique propulsion system requires materials that provide a...combination of high stiffness and high strength, while also maintaining the optimal weight targets for the vehicle."</p>
<p>The <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-08-12/overair-lifts-veil-reveal-its-butterfly-evtol-aircraft-design">Butterfly’s design</a>, which is based on the patented optimum speed propulsion system developed by company founder Abe Karem, features four large tilting propellers that spin slowly in hover mode and even slower during cruise flight. Overair says this all-electric propulsion system will reduce power consumption, boost the payload-carrying capacity, and allow the Butterfly to produce significantly less noise than helicopters and other eVTOLS.&nbsp;</p>
<p>“By using the ‘optimum speed’ for each phase of flight, Butterfly uses less battery power, leaving extra margins for safety and performance in tough weather, as well as range and payload,” Overair says on its website.</p>
<p>Overair <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-01-21/overair-starts-ground-tests-butterfly-evtols-propulsion-system">began ground testing</a> the Butterfly’s propulsion system in January 2022, and the company expects its new aircraft to take flight in 2023. It said that it is on track to complete FAA Part 23 type certification by the end of 2025, and it aims to start commercial operations in 2026.</p>

Toray Will Provide Advanced Composites for Overair's Butterfly eVTOL Prototype

<p>Vertical Aerospace has selected the Taiwanese lithium-ion battery maker E-One Moli Energy, also known as Molicel, to provide the cells that will power its VX4 eVTOL aircraft. The UK-based company announced the supplier selection on July 6.</p>
<p>Molicel will supply high-power cylindrical cells for the in-development&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/vertical-vx4?model=va-x4">Vertical’s VX4</a>, which is expected to enter service in 2025. The VX4, which seats one pilot and four passengers, is designed to be 100 times quieter than a helicopter, flying at a top speed of 202 mph (325 km/h) and covering a range of more than 100 miles (160 km) on a single charge. It features both a fixed wing and tilting rotors that will enable the aircraft to fly quietly and efficiently, according to Vertical.</p>
<p>“The future of electric aviation is dependent on safe, high-performance battery systems, and fundamental to this are the battery cells themselves,” said Vertical CEO Stephen Fitzpatrick. “That’s why I am delighted to be partnering with Molicel, producer of the world’s highest power cells. Molicel has a rich history of innovation and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in energy storage. We see many similarities between ourselves and Molicel and we couldn’t think of a better partner to bring the VX4 to market.”</p>
<p>Molicel has a 40-year history of producing rechargeable high-power battery cells that have been used for various applications, ranging from power tools and automobiles to NASA’s space exploration technologies. The battery maker, which is based in Taipei, Taiwan, is preparing to open a second factory in&nbsp;Kaohsiung to enable mass production of the cells needed for the VX4.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The VX4 will combine Molicel’s battery cell technology with Vertical’s proprietary battery pack design to produce a safe, reliable, high-performing and economical battery system. Vertical aims to have the new battery system <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-04-21/easa-will-validate-uk-certification-vertical-aerospaces-vx4-evtol-aircraft">concurrently&nbsp;certified</a> by&nbsp;the European Union’s Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in time for the VX4 to enter service by 2025.</p>


Molicel’s Lithium-ion Batteries Will Power Vertical Aerospace’s VX4 eVTOL

<p>Bye Aerospace says it’s about to hit another major milestone in the certification of its&nbsp;<a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/eflyer">eFlyer 2</a> electrically powered trainer aircraft.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The Denver-based start-up is nearing the completion of FAA approval for its means of compliance and certification plans, the company announced last week. This puts it on track to have the first all-electric, fixed-wing aircraft to be certified under the FAA’s Part 23 Amendment 64 regulations.</p>
<p>Bye has already received FAA approval for 15 of the 16 system-specific certification plans (SSCPs) for the full means of compliance certification, and it expects the last one to be approved by the end of July, the company said. Once all the SSCPs are approved, Bye will be ready to begin the testing and compliance demonstration phases of certification.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Testing has already begun on the structure, the production-conformed Siemens motor, aircraft components such as the main wing spar assembly, and other subsystems, George Bye, founder and CEO of Bye Aerospace, told&nbsp;<strong>FutureFlight</strong>.</p>
<p>Bye added that the testing and compliance demonstration work could take more than two years and will require the company to produce three&nbsp;fully production-conformed flight test aircraft. "Once these are ready and company ground and flight test has progressed to an appropriate hand-off point, integration of flight testing with the FAA will begin," he said.</p>
<p>Bye is developing the two-seat eFlyer 2 and four-seat eFlyer 4 to be used for flight training and other commercial applications, like passenger charter flights. The company is also working on a larger, eight-seat <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-01-24/bye-reports-growing-backlog-eflyer-800-electric-business-aircraft">eFlyer 800</a>.&nbsp;</p>
<p>As with the other eFlyer models, the eFlyer 2 is built to be highly efficient and cost-effective. Bye says the eFlyer 2 has more than double the aerodynamic efficiency of traditional aircraft similar in size, and the aircraft’s Safran&nbsp;100-kW <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2020-11-16/bye-aerospace-signs-deal-safran-electric-motors">Engineus electric smart motors</a> will have a high efficiency rating of 94 percent.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Bye is also working with the British company Oxis Energy <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2019-11-06/bye-aerospace-and-battery-developer-oxis-work-boost-flight-times">to develop lithium-sulfur batteries</a> that could potentially allow the aircraft to fly up to twice as long on a single charge compared with traditional lithium-ion batteries.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The eFlyer 2 will be able to remain aloft for up to three hours at a cruise speed of 155 mph (250 km/h) and a maximum altitude of 14,000 feet (4,300 meters).&nbsp;</p>
<p>Between the eFlyer 2 and eFlyer 4, Bye has received more than 700 purchase deposits, according to the company’s website. The base price of the eFlyer 2 is $489,000, while the base price of the eFlyer 4 is $627,000. Bye told <strong>FutureFlight</strong> that the company already has a $1 billion backlog of provisional orders and that it has begun collecting deposits from customers for the eFlyer 2.</p>


Bye Aerospace’s eFlyer 2 Makes Progress Toward FAA Approval

<p>Sweden-based Savback Helicopters will handle sales and marketing of Mayman Aerospace's "Speeder" high-speed vertical takeoff and landing (HSVTOL) aircraft in northern Europe, the company announced on July 5.</p>
<p>Mayman Aerospace is a subsidiary of JetPack Aviation, a Los Angeles-based company that built the world's first portable jetpack. The company aims to begin FAA certification for its new <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/speeder?model=speeder">Speeder</a> air utility vehicle (AUV) by 2024.</p>
<p>The Speeder is a compact, eight-turbine HSVTOL aircraft that is being developed for various applications, including military operations, forestry, emergency response, and personal transportation. About the size of a motorcycle, the Speeder can be flown by a pilot or autonomously in environments and weather conditions not suitable for other aircraft. It can reach speeds up to 500 mph (800 km/h), boasts a range of up to 300 nautical miles, and can carry payloads&nbsp;up to 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms).</p>
<p>"Its projected maneuverability, high speed, and heavy payload capabilities mean&nbsp;Speeder is going to be very attractive for customers looking to fulfill complex missions, far beyond the reach of conventional helicopters," said Savback's chief executive officer, Raja Savback. "The option to remotely pilot, or even autonomously pilot, further strengthens its complementary value to our existing portfolio of aviation products. We are looking forward to hosting a series of presentations for prospective customers," she added.</p>
<p>Reja Savbäck, CEO of Savback Helicopters, told&nbsp;<strong>FutureFlight</strong>&nbsp;that the current estimated cost of the Speeder will be $1.6 million per unit, while freight, training and services will come at additional costs that have not yet been determined. "As Mayman ramp up production, economies of scale will likely drive down the cost significantly," Savbäck said.</p>

Savback Will Distribute 'Speeder' Utility VTOL Aircraft in Nordic Countries

<p>Airbus has partnered with two German automotive industry players to design the rear structure of its new CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL&nbsp;aircraft. KLK Motorsport and Modell- und Formenbau Blasius Gerg will work together to design, develop, and manufacture an ultra-lightweight rear fuselage for the CityAirbus NextGen air taxi, the company announced last week.</p>
<p>The all-electric <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/aircraft-program/cityairbus-nextgen">CityAirbus NextGen</a>&nbsp;eVTOL, unveiled by the European aerospace group in September 2021, is a four-passenger, fixed-wing passenger aircraft intended mainly for urban air mobility applications. It features a V-shaped tail with eight sets of electric motors and propellers, boasts a range of 50 miles (80 kilometers), and can reach maximum speeds of up to 75 mph (120 km/h). Although the air taxi will be equipped with an automated flight mode, it will be piloted initially—at least until the urban air mobility market matures, the company has said.</p>
<p>KLK Motorsport and Gerg have worked with Airbus in the past, designing a carbon-fiber canopy for Airbus Helicopters' Rapid and Cost-Efficient Rotorcraft, better known as <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/business-aviation/2022-03-07/airbus-racer-pace-2022-first-flight">Racer</a>. Both companies also have experience working on Formula E and Formula One race cars. The team will use that expertise to develop a highly efficient airframe for the CityAirbus NextGen, Airbus officials said.</p>
<p>"The partnership with KLK Motorsport and Gerg will provide CityAirbus NextGen with a fully integrated, ultra-lightweight rear fuselage. Directly interacting with the center fuselage and the wing, the rear structure will leverage both suppliers' expertise in homogeneous design for FormulaE and Formula One vehicles, while complying with the most stringent safety and reliability standards," said Joerg Mueller, head of Urban Air Mobility at Airbus.</p>
<p>KLK Motorsport and Gerg are the latest of several companies to join Airbus in its urban air mobility efforts. Just last month, Airbus announced that it had <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-05-10/magicall-supply-electric-motors-cityairbus-nextgen-evtol-aircraft">selected Magicall</a>, a California-based company, to supply the aircraft's electric motors. Kansas-based <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2022-03-10/spirit-aerosystems-will-make-wings-cityairbus-nextgen-evtol-aircraft">Spirit Aerosystems</a> has agreed to develop and manufacture the aircraft's wings, and the European avionics group <a href="https://www.futureflight.aero/news-article/2021-11-18/thales-and-diehl-sign-cityairbus-nextgen-evtol-program-partners">Thales and Diehl</a> will develop the aircraft's flight control computers.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Airbus aims to achieve the first flight of a CityAirbus NextGen prototype in 2023, and the company expects to receive <a href="https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/general-aviation/2021-11-15/easa-certification-cityairbus-nextgen-expected-2025">EASA type certification by 2025</a>.</p>
