Embraer, Heart Aerospace, and Universal Hydrogen have joined companies including Airbus and ATR as long-term partners with Air New Zealand on its mission to replace its De Havilland Dash 8-300 twin turboprops s with zero-emissions aircraft. Announcing the new partners early on February 8, Air New Zealand said its Mission Next Generation Aircraft program anticipates the first flight of a commercial demonstrator aircraft in 2026 and now includes a total of nine companies.
Plans call for an aircraft type—likely powered with either green hydrogen or hybrid-electric systems—to start replacing the Dash 8-300s in 2030. The addition of two aircraft manufacturers and a company working to convert existing equipment to hydrogen propulsion will give it more options.
