Lilium Selects CustomCells To Provide Silicon-Anode Batteries
The German eVTOL aircraft manufacturer has developed its own batteries, which are expected to have energy density of 330 Wh/kg, and these will be made under license by CustomCells.
Batteries for Lilium’s seven-seat eVTOL aircraft will be supplied by CustomCells under an agreement announced by the two German companies on July 28. CustomCells is an established supplier of lithium-ion batteries to the aviation, automotive, and defense sectors, and recently reached an agreement with carmaker Porsche to jointly produce high-performance silicon-anode batteries, like those required for the LiliumJet.
Based on technology licensed by Lilium, CustomCells will start preparing for series production of the pouch battery cells needed for the new eVTOL aircraft, which is due to enter service in 2024. Production will be from its factory in Tubingen.
