<p>Deadlines are approaching for implementing the legal framework for the development, the placing on the market, the putting into service, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the European Union. This regulation “ensures the free movement, cross-border, of AI-based goods and services, thus preventing member states from imposing restrictions on the development, marketing, and use of AI systems.” Regulatory obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models apply starting Aug. 2, 2025. In addition, member states “should lay down and notify the [EU] commission the rules on penalties, including administrative fines, and ensure that they are properly and effectively implemented” from Aug. 2, 2025. States must be in compliance with the remainder of the requirements by Aug. 2, 2026.</p>
