To support the growth of drone operations in Australia, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) on Oct. 13, 2025, is launching a trial to make beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS)&nbsp;drone approvals more accessible. The trial introduces new broad-area approval pathways under a&nbsp;temporary management instruction order applicable to the small drone category (55 pounds and under). Each pathway sets conditions based on the drone's size and the environment in which it will be flown. Smaller drones may be approved in suburban areas. Larger drones may be approved in lightly or sparsely populated areas. “These pathways reduce hurdles and provide Australia-wide approvals while ensuring safety&nbsp;remains the top priority,” said CASA. Approvals will be issued for 12 months. Data collected to assess the trial will guide future BVLOS policy.
