Piqua, Ohio-based Hartzell Propeller announced at Sun 'n‘ Fun that it received an STC for its composite Trailblazer propeller. The prop, which is 83 inches, is made for the Super Cub PA-12 and PA-18. Hartzell Propeller worked closely with Professional Pilots, as it owns the STC, and is marketing the conversion program from its facility in Lowell, Indiana.


The Trailblazer propeller offers a field replaceable nickel-cobalt edge to endure backcountry and bush flying. Since it is durable and lightweight, the carbon-fiber structure contributes to blade chord thickness and sweep.


Alaska West Air’s Doug Brewer will be the first customer to use the updated Trailblazer propeller. Brewer, who operates a Super Cub, completes moose counts for six hours a day at between 70 and 80 mph. When flying with 70 gallons, he said, he saw a 1,500-fpm climb at 2,650 rpm while using the propeller.&nbsp;


Brian Sutton, founder and general manager of Professional Pilots, said, “This conversion allows your engine to reach its maximum rated horsepower RPM immediately upon throttle advancement. Takeoff thrust is increased by as much as 30 percent compared to many fixed-pitch models, reducing takeoff distance dramatically. Cruise speed is also increased by nearly 20 percent, allowing much greater efficiency and less engine wear.”
