Sikorsky Aircraft has selected Eaton Corp. (Stand No. P39) to design and manufacture the primary hydraulic power generation system for the U.S. Marine Corp’s new heavy-lift CH-53K helicopter. 
During the development phase of the program, which runs through 2014, Eaton will provide the systems and components for five to 10 shipsets, in addition to a number of test sets. The Marines expect to buy more than 156 CH-53Ks.
Eaton also is negotiating low-rate initial production-year two (LRIP2) for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. LRIP2 will include performance-based logistics (PBL), advertised by the company as a significant step forward in implementing the JSF program’s approach to sustaining the aircraft worldwide. Eaton is one of a small number of contractors selected to pilot the PBL concept in LRIP2.
PBL is a management approach that assigns roles and responsibilities to ensure a clear allocation of accountability for total system performance.
In other Eaton developments, the company is offering advanced-generation fuel systems with pump and meter-fuel-flow capabilities with its variable displacement ring pump (VDRP). According to the company, the product provides an optimum combination of hardware robustness, reliability, thermal efficiency, controllability and lower life-cycle cost.
For thermal performance, Eaton said the VDRP offers a significant system benefit by producing only the flow and pressure demanded by the system. In the cruise and idle descent operating ranges, traditional gear pump fuel systems achieve approximately five-percent overall system efficiency. The VDRP has achieved an overall system efficiency of 25 percent under the same cruise and idle descent conditions, according to Eaton.
Meanwhile, Embraer has selected Eaton to supply the hydraulic power generation system, cockpit control panel, throttle control quadrant, landing gear control lever, flap selection control lever, primary electrical power distribution module, ram-air turbine activation and additional fluid conveyance components for its Phenom 300 light jet. 
Eaton also is supplying the Brazilian manufacturer with seven subsystem packages for the Phenom 100 very light jet, which recently achieved first flight. The package includes an electronically synchronized flap actuator system designed specifically for the VLJ.
Other subsystems include the secondary power distribution units and cockpit control panels as well as the Phenom 100’s hydraulic power generation package, landing gear control hydraulic components and cockpit controls.
