Los Angeles-area Van Nuys Airport (VNY) has been added to the list of U.S. airports where controller pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) is deployed. Pre-departure clearance (PDC) operations began today at 5:30 a.m. local time and full departure clearance (DCL) capabilities will begin on August 20. NBAA said its direct involvement in connecting the FAA and Harris Corporation with operators aided in the selection of VNY as a site for CPDLC expansion.

 


"With this Data Comm expansion, the FAA was on schedule and under budget, so it looked for additional airports where DCL capabilities would be beneficial. As part of that review, NBAA recommended Van Nuys because it is a busy business aviation airport and there are operators based there that are equipped today to take advantage of the DCL capability,” said Heidi Williams, NBAA's director of air traffic services and infrastructure.

 


CPDLC-DCL,commonly referred to as Data Comm, shifts routine exchanges between pilots and air traffic controllers from voice to data. Similar to text messaging, this capability helps in streamlining departures for commercial and business aviation. VNY is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world and the addition of PDC and DCL capabilities is expected to further implement NextGen technologies there.

 


"Business aircraft operators are becoming big players in the rollout of these technologies, and our industry and our association stand ready to support further rollouts of these capabilities going forward. With the help of our member companies in Van Nuys, both FAA and Harris Corp. will be able to fully test the new system ahead of the August 20 rollout to ensure that the process goes smoothly,” said Williams.
