FAA Publishes Upset Prevention and Recovery Training AC
The guidance, intended for airlines, is applicable to all aircraft operations.

Some pilots have failed to prevent their aircraft from entering a fully developed upset and have also not been able to properly recover from these events, according to operational data contained in a new Advisory Circular, AC 120-111. In addition to stall training, upset recovery and prevention training (UPRT) is an essential element in reducing the number of loss-of-control events or, should they occur, enabling crews to recover the aircraft and resume normal flight. Although a stall is by definition an upset, stall prevention and recovery training is contained in the current edition of AC 120-109, Stall Prevention and Recovery Training.

Core principles included in AC120-111 are enhanced instructor training on the limitations of simulation, comprehensive pilot academic training on aerodynamics, early recognition of divergence from intended flight path, upset prevention through improvements in manual handling skills and training that integrates crew resource management, including progressive intervention strategies for the pilot monitoring.
