The New England Aquarium is asking aircraft operators to help transport stranded endangered sea turtles from the Cape Cod area to facilities in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Cold temperatures and strong onshore wind in the Northeast this week have stranded more than 150 sea turtles in Cape Cod and they are suffering from hypothermia. The aquarium is working to stabilize as many as possible but lacks resources to house the “unprecedented number” of stranded sea turtles. There is an “immediate need” to fly sea turtles to other facilities. Leslie Weinstein, president of aviation fastener supplier True Lock and Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research member, is coordinating volunteer aviation assets for the effort.
