At the AEA show yesterday, Universal Avionics announced it is now taking orders for its next-generation datalink communications system, the UniLink UL-800 and UL-801 communications management unit (CMU). The UL-800 and -801 enable high-speed datalink communications between pilots and ATC, according to Universal, and feature future air navigation system (Fans 1/A) and VHF datalink mode 2 capabilities. Certification of the new CMUs is expected late this year. Honeywell surprised attendees with its announcement of the touchscreen KSN 770, which is being brought to market in partnership with Aspen Avionics by year-end. The KSN 770 features a high-resolution 5.7-inch screen, Waas LPV capability and the ability to display radar, EGPWS, datalink weather, traffic, approach charts and maps. Honeywell and Aspen will integrate the KSN 770 with Aspen’s Evolution flight display systems, said Rob Wilson, president of business and general aviation at Honeywell Aerospace, “creating a range of display options for our customers beyond those provided by the KFD 840.” FreeFlight Systems plans to be the first to offer a TSO’d ADS-B In and Out transceiver, which will sell for $4,995. Certification for the new 978-MHz RANGR transmitter/transceiver is expected in the third quarter.
