Lufthansa Technik has invested nearly $67 million in its new 161,500-sq-ft overhaul center for engines in Hamburg. The new facility will be staffed by about 700 employees, and capacity for overhauls rises from the present 320 to more than 400 engines per year. By commissioning the new facility, the company is making a significant contribution to securing the more than 2,000 engine maintenance jobs at the Hamburg site over the long term.

August Wilhelm Henningsen, Lufthansa Technik’s chairman, said, “To secure our profitable growth in the long term, we are making considerable investments in qualifying our staff and installing the latest production systems and processes, both of which are decisive foundation stones for future success in the market. The new engine overhaul center at the corporate headquarters in Hamburg is an important building block in the expansion of this high-turnover business segment.”

The new center specializes in overhauling the CFM56 and similar-size engines. According to Henningsen, flexible working time models, together with clearly structured processes and demand-oriented schedules, will play an important part in boosting productivity by up to 15 percent.
