That’s the word from Amy Sanzobrin, scheduler for Volkswagen of America. Sanzobrin reports that in scheduling a recent flight from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Los Angeles, U.S. Customs &amp; Border Protection (CBP) in Los Angeles approved an overflight direct to Los Angeles. But, being cautious, Sanzobrin contacted the San Diego customs office and was told that by no means would they give their approval. The flight plan had to be amended to allow for a customs stop in San Diego before proceeding to Los Angeles. 

The bottom line, said Sanzobrin, is that customs inspectors are not always on the same page, and perhaps not even working from the same book.

According to a spokesman for CBP in San Diego, where Brown Field Municipal Airport is the approved port of entry, an overflight exemption is required from the port directors at both the “losing” and “gaining” ports of entry.

You can get to Los Angeles from Puerto Vallarta, but don’t try to bypass San Diego.
