Air Canada Jazz reacted in decisive fashion to Porter Airlines’ plans to launch regional service from Toronto Island Airport this fall by announcing its own intention to fly from the controversial lakefront airfield starting August 28, despite calls from activists for a boycott of both the flag carrier and the airport.

Jazz plans to fly 10 round trips to Ottawa and seven to Montreal each weekday, as well as less frequent weekend service. Air Canada abandoned the island airport this spring when start-up carrier Porter Airlines assumed control of the terminal Jazz had been using to serve Ottawa. As an alternative, the Air Canada subsidiary has arranged to operate from Stolport’s facility on the island. Porter, meanwhile, expects to take delivery of the first of 10 Bombardier Q400s ahead of service launch to Ottawa early in the fall. Porter’s plans call for serving 17 destinations in Canada and the U.S. within 500 nm of Toronto.
