Digital Copilot Approach Cuts Pilot Workload, Say OEMs

Automation has become key in reducing pilot workload and Merlin Labs expects entry of its one-pilot solution into commercial service by end-2023.

Garmin has developed a suite of avionics automation capabilities that assist pilots, including envelope protection, autothrottles, autoland, smart rudder bias, and glide advice during engine emergencies.

Major avionics companies see cockpit automation playing an increasing role in reducing pilot workload in commercial and general aviation aircraft. Less pilot workload should—and will—remain the focus of flight deck automation in the near term, they say.
