Singapore Airlines grounded three of its 11 Airbus A380s to perform “precautionary” engine changes after consultations with Trent 900 manufacturer Rolls-Royce. The move comes almost a week after a Qantas A380 experienced an uncontained engine failure on a Trent 900 during a flight from Singapore to Sydney. All six of Qantas’s A380s remain grounded after the airline found evidence of oil leaks in three of the engines. Meanwhile, fellow A380 operator Lufthansa today acknowledged replacing a Trent 900 on one of its superjumbos for an unrelated reason. That airplane has returned to service.

Rolls-Royce on Monday said it has “made progress” in understanding the cause of the Qantas engine failure, and that it had agreed on a series of checks and inspections with Airbus, Trent 900 operators and airworthiness authorities. After performing those checks on the Singapore airplanes, inspectors apparently found more evidence of oil leaks, prompting SIA to order the airplanes ferried back to their base at Singapore Changi International Airport for the engine changes.
