The National Transportation Safety Board has dispatched a team of investigators this morning to assist the Transportation Safety Board of Canada with its investigation of yesterday’s runway overrun of a Trans States Airlines ERJ 145 during a rainstorm in Ottawa.

At about 2:30 p.m. EDT, the 50-seat regional jet, operated as United Express Flight 8050 (N847HK), overran Runway 25 while landing at Ottawa International Airport. Reports indicated minor injuries to the two pilots and an elderly passenger among the 36 occupants on board. Rescue teams took all three to a nearby hospital, which subsequently released them. The flight originated from Washington Dulles International Airport.

TSB of Canada senior air investigator Glen Whitney serves as the investigator-in-charge and leads a team of investigators. NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman has designated air safety investigator John Lovell as the U.S. accredited representative. The U.S. team will also include an NTSB flight operations specialist, an NTSB survival factors specialist, and technical advisors from the FAA.

The incident comes some two weeks after a series of NTSB public sessions on professionalism in the cockpit revealed two separate incidents of regional airline pilots failing to start the second engine on their jets as they prepared for takeoff. One incident involved a Trans States ERJ 145 at Washington Dulles International. The FAA has opened an enforcement investigation into that case.
