<p>Matt Thurber, editor-in-chief at AIN Media Group, has been flying since 1975 and writing about aviation since 1978 and now has the best job in the world, running editorial operations for Aviation International News, Business Jet Traveler, and FutureFlight.aero. In addition to working as an A&amp;P mechanic on everything from Piper Cubs to turboprops, Matt taught flying at his father’s flight school in Plymouth, Mass., in the early 1980s, flew for an aircraft owner/pilot, and for two summer seasons hunted swordfish near the George’s Banks off the East Coast from a Piper Super Cub. An ATP certificated fixed-wing pilot and CFII and commercial helicopter pilot, Matt is type-rated in the Citation 500 and Gulfstream V/550. <p>The TSA has established a stakeholder liaison position dedicated to addressing concerns about recent security measures, including the Large Aircraft Security Program proposal, a security directive that would require additional screenings for general aviation pilots at commercial airports and “Operation Playbook.” Juan Barnes has been tapped to fill the new role. The move comes after AOPA urged the agency to interface with pilots and operators to better understand how its policies affect the general aviation community. “Establishing a dialogue with stakeholders is crucial,” said AOPA v-p of aviation security Craig Spence. “We’ve been frustrated by the lack of communication, and this is an important first step in opening the lines of communication so that the TSA can see the impact of its actions on general aviation.” The TSA plans to provide an e-mail address for communication between the agency and GA stakeholders, along with coordinated monthly telconferences, the first of which is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. In addition to providing the TSA with feedback, said AOPA, the liaison could help lift the veil of secrecy that has hung over many of the TSA’s recent proposals and security measures.</p>
