Gregory Polek has spent his entire career in aviation journalism with AIN, starting as a proofreader and assistant to then-managing editor Mary Mahoney in 1995 after serving an internship with&nbsp;New Jersey Monthly&nbsp;magazine and completing his B.A. degree in English/Writing at New Jersey’s William Paterson College. By 1997 Polek accepted a position as an associate editor, covering the regional airline beat for&nbsp;Aviation International News&nbsp;in place of retiring industry veteran Don Anderson. The assignment took Polek across North America and Europe to profile regional airlines varying in size and mission from the likes of floatplane operators Kenmore Air and Chalk’s Ocean Airways to regional jet operators such as SkyWest and American Eagle. Today, in his dual role as Air Transport Editor and International Airshow Editor, Polek writes, edits, and manages AIN’s commercial aviation content while overseeing each of the company’s daily international air show publications in Paris, Farnborough, Singapore, and Dubai. Most recently Polek has assumed oversight of daily coverage of the Helicopter Association International’s annual Heli-Expo convention.

Bombardier Aerospace plans to raise production of its commercial aircraft by about 10 percent this year, the company announced yesterday. The increase comes as the company continues to enjoy relatively strong demand for its Q400 turboprop, while the backlog for its CRJ line of regional jets dwindles. During its last fiscal year, which ended January 31, Bombardier delivered 110 commercial airplanes, while net order intake totaled 114 with the addition of 47 CRJs and 67 Q Series turboprops to its sales ledger. A 10-percent increase in production output would amount to 121 airplanes on the commercial side for this fiscal year. That improvement won’t quite offset a planned 10-percent cut in production planned for Bombardier’s business jets, however, as that sector accounted for more than double the output of its commercial airplanes last year, when the company delivered 239 business jets. The increase in Q Series production also won’t prove sufficient to save the jobs of some 1,010 temporary workers and 350 permanent employees Bombardier expects to lay off due to largely to the planned cut in business jet production.
