The Royal Aircraft Establishment often conducted research and completed tests on aircraft such as the DH9A with its Liberty air cooled engine in 1933 (above). In September of 1936, RAF Squadron Leader Ron Swain broke the world altitude record when he departed RAE in a modified Bristol Type 138A and reached 49,967 feet. in his pressure suit (right).
