Southwest Airlines last week was put on the receiving end of another FAA effort to settle an outstanding civil penalty. The agency sued the carrier for $12 million, alleging it hired a maintenance contractor in 2006–Aviation Technical Services–that incorrectly performed fuselage repair work on a number of Southwest aircraft. The agency contends the contractor did not accurately follow prescribed maintenance procedures; Southwest disputes the charge and says it plans to defend itself in court vigorously.
