FlightSafety International cut the ribbon on the major expansion and renovation project at its Teterboro, N.J learning center yesterday. The expansion increased floor space by 50 percent and refurbished the entire facility, including a new lobby area and café.


The primary addition to the facility is a crew emergency training program. For this, FlightSafety installed a cabin dunking trainer, which splashes into a full-size pool that is also used for life-raft training and helicopter basket recovery. The program includes a device that replicates the downwash of the helicopter rotors.


Also new is a cabin emergency trainer; although built up from the fuselage of a Gulfstream II, it includes door and window exits from Dassault Falcons. The cabin mockup has full visual simulation of various emergencies that plays through the side windows, as well as Dolby sound for added realism. It is available for crew and passenger emergency egress training.


According to a spokesman, FlightSafety decided to install the crew emergency training center at Teterboro because so many flight crews cycle through the airport, often with layover time available for the regularly required training. The Teterboro facility currently houses five full-motion simulators and has room for three more.
